Tips for Choosing A Domain Name
- It should be easy to say. Test it... Say it out loud
- It should be easy to remember
- It should say what you do/are, similar to your company name, people often just try adding www in front of your name
- How will it sound over the phone/radio
- It should be easy to spell. If the word could be spelled differently e.g. b or be, or 24 or twentyfour you may want to register both
- Avoid dashes
- Are the other popular extensions used by competitors?
- Does it contain keywords people would type into search engines when looking for something you offer?
- Shorter is best (Domain names can be of any length up to 67 characters)
- .com & .ca are most popular
- www.netcraft.com - Search through registered domain names using its "site contains" helps you find sites with similar names.
- Do you also need to register the plural version in anticipation? e.g. website.com and websites.com
- Contact a lawyer re copywrite / trademark infringement
- Remember that listings come up alphabetically, so web sites beginning with a number or the first few letters of the alphabet help customers find you more easily
